There are race days, and then there are those rare, unforgettable spectacles where history, heart, and heroics collide.
The 2025 Randox Grand National Day delivered it all — an emotional win, legendary performances, and milestones that will be talked about for years to come. Here’s how the day unfolded…
NICK ROCKETT IGNITES THE RANDOX GRAND NATIONAL
Patrick Mullins makes history in emotional family triumph. In an unforgettable moment, Patrick Mullins became the 43rd amateur rider to win the Randox Grand National guiding Nick Rockett to a victory charged with heart, history, and family pride.
It marked a first National win for Patrick, but a third for his legendary father Willie Mullins, who now joins an elite club of three-time winning trainers in the world’s most iconic steeplechase.
Despite drifting out to 33-1, Nick Rockett stormed home with the heart of a lion, delivering a win that meant the world to owner Stewart Andrew, who dedicated the moment to his late wife, Sadie.
“It’s one thing to win a Grand National, "Willie Mullins said, his voice thick with emotion. “But to do it with your son in the saddle — it’s indescribable." As Nick Rockett crossed the line, history was made. Not just in the record books, but in the hearts of a family, a nation, and every racing fan lucky enough to witness the magic.
HIGH FIVE FROM WILLIE
A masterclass from a training giant. Willie Mullins continues to raise the bar in jump racing — and the 2025 Grand National was one of his boldest statements yet. Five of the top seven finishers wore his stamp of excellence, a display of dominance rarely, if ever, seen on such a grand stage.
First, second, third, fifth and seventh. It wasn’t just depth — it was control, precision, and pure class. From the brilliance of I Am Maximus, to the gallant efforts of Grangeclare West and Minella Cocooner, Mullins turned Aintree into a showcase of his unrivalled arsenal.
HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY
Elliott finally gets his Grand National Festival win. Gordon Elliott’s string had knocked on the door all week, but finally, it was Honesty Policy who kicked it open. In the Turners Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, the 5-1 shot showed every bit of grit and promise, storming home late to deliver a cathartic win for the yard.
It wasn’t just a win — it was a sigh of relief and a moment of validation after a string of near-misses.
“We’re just not getting the rub of the green, but the horses are running well,” Elliott said. This time, the green lights finally came.
ROBCOUR RULE THE ROOST
Hiddenvalley Lake shines in the staying division. The iconic Robcour silks shone brightest once again in the Ivy Liverpool Hurdle, as Hiddenvalley Lake and Darragh O'Keeffe delivered a staying performance brimming with class and grit. A perfectly judged ride and a resolute finish crowned a stellar campaign for owner Brian Acheson, whose influence on the staying hurdle scene continues to grow with real authority.
This latest success adds to a glittering record in the division, with Bob Olinger having stormed home in the 2025 Stayers’ Hurdle and Teahupoo, the 2024 winner, still a key player despite missing this year’s renewal due to quick ground.
One thing’s for sure: when the staying races come calling, Robcour are now the ones to beat.
