Trainer Aidan O’Brien today became the most successful trainer of all-time in the five British Classic races – the 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Oaks, Derby and St Leger.
The success of Tuesday in today’s Cazoo Oaks at Epsom Downs took O’Brien to a total of 41 British Classic victories. O’Brien previously shared the record with John Scott, who saddled 40 Classic winners between 1827 and 1863.
O’Brien’s 41 Classic successes so far have been achieved over a relatively short period of 23 years. His first came with King Of Kings in the 1998 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, with his first Epsom Downs Classic following shortly after when Shahtoush landed the 1998 Oaks.
Subsequent super sire Galileo provided the first of his record eight Derby victories in 2001.
