A Second Success - 43 Years Later
Ezeliya secured Ireland's 16th win in the esteemed Group One Betfred Oaks today with her impressive victory. It was a remarkable achievement for trainer Dermot Weld as he secured his second win in the mile and a half fillies’ Classic, 43 years after Lester Piggott guided Blue Wind to victory in the 1981 renewal.
To top that success, it was also a first UK Classic success for jockey Chris Hayes who said “She moved forward quicker than I thought she was going to. I never had a moment’s doubt, once I was approaching the furlong pole, I knew nothing was going to be able to come as quickly as she was going to finish. It took me right to the end to pull her up - it’s probably because I was celebrating as well, but I had a good bit of petrol left. It was brilliant”.
Trainer Dermot Weld said: "Chris gave her a beautiful ride. That was the plan, to ride her the same as he rode her at Navan, where he dropped her out last. She loves to come from off the pace.
Moore Paced The Race To Perfection
Luxembourg benefitted from a superb Ryan Moore tide to make every yard a winning one in today’s Group One Holland Cooper Coronation Cup. This win marks the fourth Group One victory for five-year-old Luxembourg.
The Ryan Moore masterclass saw the rider control the pace from the start and turned away challenges from Emily Upjohn and Hamish to seal a stylish victory at odds of 9-4.
The winning trophy was presented by His Majesty King Charles and Her Majesty Queen Camilla, who attended the event in support of their horse Treasure who was running in The Betfred Oaks later in the afternoon.
Bolster Up for a Winner
The most valuable handicap of the day, the £100,000 Betfred Nifty Fifty Handicap over 10 furlongs, went the way of Bolster (5-1) to bring up a 26-1 Ladies Day double for trainer Karl Burke.
Winning jockey Pierre-Louis Jamin said: “He’s a horse that always keeps himself to himself at home and doesn’t show a lot, but when he won the last day at Pontefract we were quite surprised the way he did it so easily, and I came here today hoping for a big run as well.
“Karl left it more or less up to me, but I thought if I could make the running and get an easy lead and kick off the bend, I thought he’d be hard to pass.
“I think he will progress. I hope he’s at least a Group Three horse; every time they came to him, he’d go again. These conditions are definitely what he wants - Good to Soft or Soft is perfect for him.”
The most anticipated event in the racing calendar, where history is made and legends are born. Limited tickets remain.
