Style Wednesday 2025
Style Wednesday is a celebration of sophistication, sporting excellence, and stories that resonate far beyond the track. This year, the occasion was tinged with deep emotion as two winners were ridden to victory—both previously steered to success by Michael O’Sullivan at the 2023 Festival. On a day when fashion met history, it was as if O’Sullivan was watching over Cheltenham, his legacy woven into every stride, every cheer, and every moment of magic.
Marine Fulfills the Dream
Marine Nationale delivered an emotional and dominant victory in the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase, storming home by 18 lengths. With favourite Jonbon making a costly mistake and Quilixios falling at the last, Marine Nationale seized his moment, showcasing his class on the grandest stage. For trainer Barry Connell, it was a triumph years in the making, but beyond the race, the occasion carried poignant weight as he dedicated the win to the late Michael O’Sullivan—who had guided the horse to Supreme Novices’ Hurdle glory two years prior.
Jockey Sean Flanagan, who has been aboard Marine Nationale throughout this year's chase campaign, paid tribute to O’Sullivan, recognizing the young rider’s defining role in the horse’s career. "I’m only the man that steered him round today—Michael is the man who made him what he is," Flanagan said. More than a Festival triumph, this was a victory that honored a legacy.
Racing Fate at Its Finest
Just 40 minutes after Marine Nationale’s triumph, Jazzy Matty delivered another emotional victory in the Debenhams Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase, completing an unforgettable double in memory of Michael O’Sullivan. Trained by Cian Collins, Jazzy Matty surged up the famous Cheltenham hill to win by a length and a half, holding off the 11-2 favourite, Unexpected Party. For Collins, saddling his first Festival winner, the moment was surreal. “This is for Michael,” he said, as fate seemed to shine down on those closest to the late jockey.
Jockey Danny Gilligan executed a flawless ride, guiding Jazzy Matty with confidence. “Never missed a beat… there’s someone very special looking down on us today,” he reflected. More than just a victory, this was a tribute—a moment that ensured O’Sullivan’s spirit and legacy would forever be part of Cheltenham’s history.
The Slow Fashion Awards
The Slow Fashion Awards at Cheltenham Festival celebrate sustainability and timeless style, recognising racegoers who embrace vintage, borrowed, or investment fashion pieces. The awards encourage thoughtful choices that stand the test of time, blending tradition with modern values.
This year's winner, Cordelia Chugg, impressed the judges with her impeccable ensemble, securing the top prize. She was followed by Stephen Grogan in second place and Juspith Beckett in third. The awards, held on Style Wednesday, highlight the festival’s dedication to both fashion and sustainability, proving that elegance and environmental consciousness can go hand in hand.
St. Patrick's Thursday is where the spirit of Cheltenham meets the soul of Ireland, creating an unmatched festival atmosphere that’s both joyous and fiercely competitive.
