Gold Cup Day 2025
Gold Cup Day at the Cheltenham Festival delivered an unforgettable finale to a week filled with emotion, passion, and breathtaking drama. From nail-biting finishes to history-making moments, every race had the crowd on edge.
Fans witnessed champions crowned, rising stars emerge, and heart-stopping twists that will be talked about for years.
And at the heart of it all, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup provided the ultimate showdown—one that saw a valiant effort in defeat and a new hero rise to the occasion.
The Gold Cup Battle: A Brave Bid, a New Champion
Galopin Des Champs set out to etch his name in history as the first horse since Best Mate to win three consecutive Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cups. But despite his fighting spirit, it was the younger, stronger Inothewayurthinkin who seized the moment.
Supplemented at the last minute, the Gavin Cromwell-trained star proved the gamble was worth it, powering up the hill to win by six and a half lengths. The victory marked a first Gold Cup triumph for both jockey Mark Walsh and trainer Gavin Cromwell, while legendary owner J.P. McManus celebrated his second win in chasing’s most prestigious race.
For Galopin Des Champs, the dream of a historic treble slipped away, as he struggled to find his rhythm on the drying ground. Despite a determined late rally, he had to settle for second, with Gentlemansgame a distant third. It was a battle of heart and endurance, a race that showcased the very essence of National Hunt racing—unpredictable, emotional, and utterly enthralling.
As the dust settles on another incredible Festival, Inothewayurthinkin’s triumph will be remembered as the day a new Gold Cup hero was crowned.
Willie Mullins: Unconquerable at Cheltenham Once Again
Although Galopin Des Champs missed out on making history for the Closutton team, Willie Mullins still reinforced his status as the Festival’s dominant force with another breathtaking display of training brilliance.
Gold Cup Day kicked off in sensational style as the Mullins-trained Poniros shocked the field in the JCB Triumph Hurdle, storming home at 100-1 to become the longest-priced winner in the race’s history. Making his hurdling debut, the Tony Bloom-owned gelding timed his run to perfection, edging past Lulamba and East India Dock in a thrilling finale. Mullins admitted even he was stunned by the performance, proving once again that in his hands, anything is possible.
If the Triumph Hurdle set the tone, Mullins made sure the day remained his. He went on to secure the first four victories of the afternoon, with Kargese, Dinoblue, and Jasmin De Vaux adding to the Closutton tally.
Those wins took his Festival total to 10 for the week, ensuring yet another Trainers’ title for the Irish maestro. His success also played a crucial role in Ireland’s dominant 20-8 victory over Great Britain in the Prestbury Cup.
While Galopin Des Champs’ Gold Cup dream ended in defeat, there was no stopping Mullins from once again ruling Cheltenham—a truly unconquerable force on racing’s biggest stage.
